For me, the 365-Project began a long time ago when the idea was first conceived. It wasn’t concrete then, but I did know I wanted to somehow interact with people, hear their thoughts, stay motivated and work on my creative endurance.

During the summer of 2010, I realized my desk job had become entirely too mind-numbing and I had to do something immediately to avoid spiritual collapse. My personal art at the time was very centered on my own thoughts and experiences. I longed to express beyond what was within myself, so I set out to create a painting a day for 365 days based on written submissions from others. Old friends, new friends, total strangers and everyone in-between were asked to describe an image of characters, concepts, places… anything they felt would look great in a water-based medium. I would then try to create it accurately, though loosely based on my own interpretation. It was a joint project, a collaboration and the project began on Reddit.

By November of that same year, my life had taken a drastic turn. I had become an art director to a start-up (on top of my full-time job), taken on 4 freelance gigs, had 2 art shows (while preparing a 3rd) and various family related issues to boot. It isn’t in me to quit and I hated making this decision, but I had to stop. Poor time management had caught up with me and I missed a day, then two. I wanted this project to be an honest reflection of my abilities and what I had set out to do, thus if it continued it wasn’t going to be so. In the end, the project became solely about endurance and no longer about inspiration or exploration. I am, however, determined to try this project again in the near future… maybe for a shorter duration to start and definitely with a new angle. Either way, next time, I’m starting on January 1.
